Fall baseball league to begin in August

Galion will kick off its fall baseball league for boys entering grades 9-12 on Aug. 27. The league will come to a stop on Oct. 8, with no games being played on Labor Day weekend. Registration is now open for area high school players and will continue until Aug. 4 when fees and applications are due.

HOJGA: Keller wins at Blues Creek

MARYSVILLE — The fourth tournament of the Heart of Ohio Junior Golf season took place on June 26 at Blues Creek Golf Course. Galion’s Logan Keller won the 16-18 division with a score of 74. A couple of other Tigers placed well, too.

Mayfly hatch disrupts fishing

I have spent a lot of time in the last month up at Lake Erie doing a lot of fishing. The action has been good with all three species, walleye, largemouth bass, and smallmouth bass but it recently came to almost a standstill for several days. The culprit? The hatch of the mayflies.

Cavs select Bates with lone pick

The Cleveland Cavaliers made their lone pick of the 2023 NBA Draft with the 49th overall pick on Thursday night. With that second-round pick, the Cavs selected Eastern Michigan sophomore Emoni Bates, a 6-foot-9 forward who averaged 19.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game last season.

OHSAA officials hall of fame inductees, officials of the year to be honored

COLUMBUS — Fourteen individuals will be enshrined in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Officials Hall of Fame and 20 individuals will be honored as the Official of the Year in their respective sport Saturday during the OHSAA Officials Hall of Fame induction banquet in Columbus at the Hilton Polaris.

McMullen finishes runner-up at Marion Country Club

MARION — Area golfers recently competed at Marion Country Club in a Heart of Ohio Junior Golf Association event. Mount Gilead’s Steven Street shot three over par to win the event. Galion had a pair of golfers place well, however.

B1G releases new scheduling format, Ohio State opponents set for ‘24, ‘25

As the college football landscape continues to evolve, so, too, does the structure of the Big Ten’s scheduling format. With UCLA and USC set to join the conference beginning in 2024, the conference announced last Thursday it will do away with divisions in conjunction with the expansion to 16 teams.
