Tigers’ girls eighth in team standings
TIFFIN — Galion’s Braxton Tate is headed to the state cross country meet for the third year in a row. During Division II action Saturday, he finished third in the race with a time of 15:23.59. The top 12 individual qualifiers advanced, along with the top three teams.
In 2017, Tate finished 57th at state in 16:55.8. Last year, he turned in a ninth-place effort, in 16:33.7.
The 2019 State Cross Country Tournament is Saturday at National Trail Raceway in Hebron. The boys Division II race is scheduled to start at 2:15 p.m.
Shelby’s Caleb Brown won D-22 race in Tiffin, in 14:57.89, followed by Mhalicki Bronson of Defiance, in 15:07.65.
In the D-II girls race, Galion was eighth in the team standings. The top four teams and 16 individuals advanced. Lexington won the team title, and had three of the top four finishers. Ontario, Lima Shawnee and Celina also advanced to the state meet.
Lexington’s Halle Hamilton won in 17:55.10, while teammates Lily Weeks (18:04.39) and Joanna Halfhill (18:25.89) where second and fourth.

Airyona Nickels and Zaynah Tate are now both members of the top-10 fastest race times in Galion girls cross country history. Nickels’ high school career came to an end on Saturday at the Division II regional in Tiffin.
For Galion, Airyona Nickels was 29th in 20:18.61; followed by Zaynah Tate (33rd in 20:24.54); Brooklyn Gates (37th in 20:37.570; Emily McDonald (46th in 20:54.93); Ava Smith (76th in 22:25.77); Jasmine Clingman (85th in 23:12.15) and Natalee Perkins (91st in 23:51.30).
Nickels’ career come to an end Saturday, but her time at Tiffin was one of the Top 10 in Galion girls cross country history.
Colonel Crawford competes at Tiffin
TIFFIN — Colonel Crawford’s girls team, and Jacob Hoffman from the boys squad, took part in the Division III, Region X race. The top seven teams and top-28 individuals advanced in the two races.
Hoffman was 121st overall, in 18:16.33.
The Lady Eagles were 22nd in the team standings. Alison Manko, was the top runner for Crawford. She finished 65th, in 21:08.03. Katie Hopkins was 96th in 21:39.04; Also running were: Ally Hocker (15oth, 22:57,82); Caydence Agee (154th, 23:06.77); Maria Smith (159th, 23:19.66); Theresa Dzugan (171st, 24:17.12) and Sheba Sulser (173rd, 24:33.75.
Liberty Center’s Hope Oelkrug won the D-III girls race with her time of 18:26.21 while Minster won the team title with 62 points. Liberty Center, Columbus Grove, Archbold, Woodmore, New London and Delphos St. John’s all qualified for state.
In the D-III boys race, Noah Fisher of Ayersville won in 15:41.10 while. New London claimed the team title with 68 points. Rounding out the team qualifiers were Sandusky SMCC, Hopewell-Loudon, Holgate, Minster, Crestview andLiberty Center,
