New Riegel, Buckeye Central beat Tigers in volleyball


NEW WASHINGTON — The Tigers volleyball team was in New Washington on Saturday to meet up with both the Buckeye Central Buckettes and the New Riegel Blue Jackets in a tri-match.

First up  New Riegel, which defeated the Tigers in two sets; 25-15 and 25-19.

Marisa Gwinner and Gabby Abouhassan were the primary attackers at the net for coach Jamie Valentine. Gwinner was 14/16 hitting and had eight kills and Abouhassan went 9/12 hitting with four kills. In total, Galion had just 15 kills for the match. Morgan Gregory went 46/48 handling the setting duties for the Tigers while recording 13 assists.

Gregory was also one of the top servers for Galion, alongside Callie Wildenthaler. Wildenthaler was a perfect 9/9 from the service line with five points and an ace. Gregory added 8/10 serving with five points and the other three aces that the Tigers recorded for the match.

Defensively, Galion had 20 digs against the Blue Jackets’ attack. Ashley Flowers and Gregory had five digs apiece.

With the defeat, Galion’s record fell to 6-11 for the 2016 season.

Looking to bounce back, the Tigers took to the court against the home team.

Buckeye Central defeated Galion in two sets as well; 25-16 and 25-10.

In the two sets against the Buckettes, the Tigers were only able to serve the ball a total of 20 times. Galion was 16/20 as a team and notched just eight service points. Morgan Gregory had the only two aces for the Tigers, going 2/2 serving with two points. Chloe McCleese also did her part to help, going 5/7 serving with five points.

Galion’s defense had two blocks and 31 digs in the losing effort. They were also 31/37 serve reception against Buckeye Central.

At the net, Galion recorded an uncharacteristic 11 kills. Marisa Gwinner had six of those kills, going 16/18 hitting. Abby Foust was a perfect 5/5 at the net, grabbing the team three more kills. Gregory was 45/46 on the attack setup with 10 assists.

Galion is now 6-12 on the year and remains at 5-5 in league play.
