Galion man narrowly avoids prison

A Galion man narrowly avoided prison time on Wednesday when he was sentenced on a robbery charge in Crawford County Common Pleas Court on Wednesday.

Tristan L. Lucas, 20, 325 N. Market St., was sentenced to three years of community control after pleading guilty to one count of robbery, a second-degree felony.

He admitted to robbing the Freezer Fresh ice cream store in Crestline on July 15 along with his co-defendants, Mikel J. Knetter II, 19, Crestline, and Kalib G. Utz, 20, Mansfield. The trio brandished a pellet gun in the commission of their crime.

Knetter was sentenced about a month ago to two years in prison for violating his probation from a 2014 burglary conviction.

“Knetter was on probation in Crawford County so we sentenced him on the probation violation of committing a new crime. Utz will be sentenced in Richland County because he is on probation there,” said Judge Sean Leuthold.

Leuthold said he cut Lucas a break by sentencing him to probation.

“He is employed and does not have a previous felony record,” Leuthold said.

Leuthold was stern when he told Lucas not to violate the terms of his community control.

“No drinking, no drugs and no hanging out with felons. If you screw up, I will not hesitate to send you to prison for three years,” Leuthold said.

Leuthold also ordered Lucas to pay a $1,000 fine and $4,034 in restitution.

Jamie R. Fultz, 20, Galion, was sentenced to five years in prison on Tuesday on one count of carrying a concealed weapon and one count of burglary.

Fultz admitted to breaking into an empty house owned by his girlfriend’s parents. Co-defendant Fredrick Miller was recently sentenced to three years in prison on burglary and safecracking charges. Another co-defendant, Christian Jackson, received community control in January after pleading guilty to one count of receiving stolen property and one count of safecracking.

A fourth co-defendant in the case, Laura Martinez, is being held on one count of burglary, a second-degree felony.
