Galion students winners in art competition

GALION — Two Galion High School students are regional winners in the Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition, the premier student art competition in the state.

Approximately 12,000 pieces of original artwork were entered at the regional level, from which 2,500 were selected to move on to the state judging. From there, 350 pieces were selected for the Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition and showcased at the James A. Rhodes Office Tower in Columbus.

The artwork of Skylar Beachy and Alexis Link were regional winners in District 2 judging at Ontario High School. Beachy marker drawing on Mylar, and Link, photography and mixed media drawing were among nearly 1,000 other pieces from students representing 19 different school districts.

“Skyler and Alexis did an outstanding job creating and preparing their artwork for the judging,” said Galion High School Art teacher Linda Wilson. “I am very proud of them for their dedication and hard work in creating their original pieces of art.”

Both pieces were entered in the state judging competition. While their pieces were not selected among the 300 for display in the Columbus exhibition, their artwork will be displayed in the 2017 Regional High School Exhibition and Art Educators Exhibition at the Mansfield Art Center March 18 through April 16.

“Mrs. Wilson does a fantastic job working with our high school students to help them prepare for this competition each year,” said Galion Superintendent Jim Grubbs. “I am very proud of Skyler and Alexis for having their work taken to the next level of judging in this year’s Governor’s art show, and plan to enjoy their work on display at the Mansfield Art Center.”
