SENTENCING ANNOUNCED IN FRAUD CASE – Lieutenant Governor Mary Taylor announced that Cleveland resident Joel December was sentenced on July 7 in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court to eight months in jail followed by three years on community control for insurance fraud.
An incarcerated December directed Asia Brown – a co-defendant in the case awaiting sentencing – to file a false claim with an insurance company claiming that multiple personal items valued at approximately $21,000 were taken from their residence.
“Insurance fraud schemes such as these affect everyone by increasing the cost of insurance,” said Taylor, also Director of the Ohio Department of Insurance. “I’m very proud of the department’s fraud division, which works tirelessly to protect consumers by bringing to justice individuals who conspire to break the law.”
CLEVELAND METROPARKS ANNOUNCES NEW BEACH ACCESS – After examining a number of alternatives, Cleveland Metroparks has received approval from the Army Corps of Engineers to modify a portion of Euclid/Villa Angela Beach that will provide the community with a temporary, designated swim area. The designated swim area will provide neighborhood residents and visitors the opportunity to access water for heat relief and other beach activities as Cleveland Metroparks continues to work on identifying a permanent solution for the site.
Shortly after taking over the management of Euclid/Villa Angela Beach from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Cleveland Metroparks identified a number of hazards, including unpredictable drop-offs and underwater debris that made swimming unsafe at the site. The designated swim area has been established to minimize those risks and to honor Cleveland Metropark’s commitment to providing beach visitors with a safe, high-quality lakefront experience. The designated swim area will be available to the public beginning this Saturday, July 25, 2015. Lifeguards will be on duty from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on the weekends (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) starting this Saturday through Sunday, August 16, 2015.
The Beach Safety Patrol and Park Rangers will continue to be on-site to protect and educate visitors. Cleveland Metroparks will monitor the conditions of the designated swim area and will keep the community informed of any changes.
