The Galion Board of Education is starting to look at spending its Freese funds.

Board members gave first reading Thursday night to a proposed agreement between the city and the school district on the Freese allocation.

In February, Galion City Council approved a recommendation by the Freese Grant Advisory Board for a $360,000 project which was submitted by the Galion Boosters Club, the Galion Alumni Association, and Galion Youth Baseball and Youth Softball.

The funds are distributed through a three-to-one matching grant program, administered through an advisory board.

In his will, Egbert Freese listed education and improvements to parks and recreation activities as the primary uses of the money, as well as for the general benefit of the community. One-eighth of each year’s distribution will continue to be reserved for college scholarships for Galion High School graduates.

Board members said the project will include:

* Unckrich Stadium south bleachers and home side press box

* New concession facility at Unckrich Stadium

* Purchase of reconditioned bleachers (Unckrich Stadium and baseball)

* Purchase and installation of new Musco lighting at baseball field

* Re-purposing of lighting at girls’ softball field

* Public address system

* Playing surface material

Galion Superintendent Mark Stefanik said he believes the south bleacher project would be completed by the start of the football season. No other completion dates were confirmed.

In other business, the board approved contracts with the following high school head coaches for the 2015-2016 school year. Bryce Lehman, Boys Golf; Mark Barrier, Girls Golf; George Guins, Cross Country; Michelle Harmon, Cheerleeading; Chris Hawkins, Football; Brent Tyrell, Wrestling; Ted Temple, Swimming, Todd Roston, Track; Phil Jackson, Baseball; Douglas Hunt, Softball.

The board also approved the hiring of a softball coach to comply with Title IX requirements, providing that there are enough participants for a team.
