Farewell to one of our own

TIP OF THE HAT – To our own Matt Echelberry who announced his departure from the paper. His last day was Friday. Echelberry, a native of the area, has been a consistent part of the paper for the past three years. Matt, it’s been a pleasure to have you as part of our team and we wish you nothing but the best in your future.

TIP OF THE HAT – For the Galion Graders and the opening of its season. The crowds have been great so far and it’s been encouraging to see the special nights that are being offered (fireworks, etc.) We’re looking forward to seeing how the team continues to upgrade its in-game experiences. It’s been a good start and we’re interested to see how the team can keep it up.

TIP OF THE HAT- To Northmor freshman Demetrius Johnson who won the long jump at the Division III state track meet. It’s a great accomplishment and we’re looking forward to see how Johnson follows up his feat in the next few years.

TIP OF THE HAT – To the Galion girls 4×100-meter relay team of Alasha Williams, Sydney Hunt, Michela Slone and Clair Erlsten who finished second at last weekend’s Division II state meet. Erlsten, Slone and Williams also teamed with M’Lynn Gwinner to place eighth in the 4×200 relay. Congrats, girls!

TIP OF THE HAT – To Colonel Crawford senior Clay Martin for finishing second in the 800-meter run at the Division III state track meet. In addition, Callie Ruffener claimed seventh place in the girls pole vault and Chad Johnson placed seventh in the 3,200-meter run. Way to go, Eagles!

TIP OF THE HAT – To the progress that continues to be made on the preservation efforts of the Big Four Depot in Galion. We’re glad to see the work that city consultant Wendy Zucal has made on the project.

WAG OF THE FINGER – To the high number of public records requests that have been received by Galion. Last week, the city received five, including three from one individual. We fully support transparent government and believe in the power of public records requests, but believe excessive requests cost time and isn’t the best use of your taxpayer money.

WAG OF THE FINGER – To the ongoing debate over whether Galion residents were overcharged in the past for electric rates. While the discussion itself has its merits, we’re disappointed that no resolution has been reached on the matter. It’s a debate that won’t go away and we’re concerned that nothing has been done so far to quiet the speculation. And if claims that money wasn’t properly charged are true, we grieve the thought that the city would have to spend even more money to find proper answers.

TIP OF THE HAT – In a city where it’s hard sometimes to find people interested in running for public office, we applaud the fact that Galion Treasurer Paula Durbin is interested in remaining in public service after announcing her run for Council this week. We’re hopeful that if elected, Durbin, like all public officials who run for office, would take an active role in her position and work with other city officials to find consensus on ways of making the city better.

TIP OF THE HAT – To the 126 seniors who graduated Galion High School last Friday night. Best of luck in your future endeavors.

TIP OF THE HAT – To Galion’s own Crazy Gringos, which is preparing for a concert July 5 during the Pickle Run Festival. We’re looking forward to a great performance.
