Swimming: Galion boys win meet, girls defeated

The Galion High School swimming team had mixed results from its season opener and dual meet and with Ontario in Mansfield Tuesday evening.

Although Galion’s girls lost to the host school 62-31, the boys won 60-31. Galion grabbed 13 first-place finishes, and nine second- and seven third-place finishes between the girls and boys.

“Eli Skaggs had a tremendous evening for Galion, posting great times early in the season,” Galion head swimming coach Ted Temple said.

Skaggs finished first in the 200-yard IM (2:06.67) and the 100 butterfly (55.60).

Also placing first for the Tigers were Lucas Conner (200 freestyle), Sam Rigdon (50 free), Clay Karnes (500 free) and Luke Eisnaugle (100 breaststroke).

In addition, the Galion boys won three relays. Skaggs, Eisnaugle, Karnes and Rigdon finished the 200 medley relay in 1:54.27, while Conner, Weston Rose, Gideon Johnson and Landon Rose won the 200 free relay in 1:51.62. In the 400 free relay, Skaggs, Rigdon, Karnes and Eisnaugle sported 3:49.17.

For the girls, Briana Wallis finished first place in the 200 free and 100 free. Allison DeNero won the 200 IM and 100 butterfly. In the relays, Sari Conner, Wallis, Elice Barnhart and DeNero took second in the 200 free relay (1:57.01).

Galion will host a dual meet with Colonel Crawford at 4 p.m. Dec. 7.

Colonel Crawford Eagles, Wynford Royals

Colonel Crawford won its first swim meet of the season in a quad meet Monday.

In all, the host school grabbed 16 first-place finishes, as well as 12 second- and eight third-place finishes, which led the way to a grand total of 347 points between the girls and boys.

The Lady Eagles tallied 176 points. Grabbing first place were Jillianne Gregg (50 free), Callie Ruffener (100 free), Chloe Grove (500 free) and Madison Sharp (100 backstroke).

The girls also won three relay events, each by more than 10 seconds. Megan Sharp, Kennedy Speck, Gregg and Pierce Krassow finished the 200 medley relay in 1:59.16, while Madison Sharp, Ruffener, Grove and Gregg won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:45.15. In the 400 free relay, Madison Sharp, Krassow, Grove and Megan Sharp and Ruffener sported a 3:56.

Colonel Crawford’s boys totaled 171 points and nine first-place finishes. Taking first individually were Grant Pfeifer (200, 500 free), Jake Johnson (200 IM, 100 breaststroke), Ryan Johnson (50) and Jacob Roesch (100 backstroke).

In relays, the boys 200 medley team of Nic Motter, Johnson, Roesch and Pfeifer recorded a 1:55.35 for first place. Roesch, Ryan Johnson and Jake Johnson, and Pfeifer also took first in the 200 free (1:39.42) as did the 400 free team of Alex Hershey, Keton Pfeifer, Motter amd Ryan Johnson (4:04.24).

Upper Sandusky took second with a grand total of 251 points, followed by Wynford (98) and Calvert (30).

Finishing in third place were Wynford’s boys, which tallied 15 points, while the girls brought in 18 points for fourth.

The top spot for Wynford’s boys came from Bradley Watkins, who nabbed fifth in the 100 free and 100 backstroke, and Rose Josh who placed fifth in the 50 free.

For the girls, Annika Gerlach notched sixth in the 200 free and 50 free, while Grace Piatt placed sixth in the 100 backstroke and Hannah Crabtree was sixth in the 100 breaststroke.

On Dec. 5, the Eagles will compete in a Shelby Invitational, while the Royals compete in a Friendly House Invitational in Lexington.
