Tigers and Eagles swim teams had a busy weekend

NORTH ROBINSON — Both the Galion Tigers and the Colonel Crawford Eagles had swimmers in action last Saturday at the annual Colonel Crawford Relays.

The Eagles’ girls squad would win the meet, scoring 84 points. Marion Pleasant finished in second with 68, Willard in third with 40 and Galion would take fourth with 26 total points.

The team of Raye Hershey, Drew Krassow, Chloe Carman and Kennedy Speck from Crawford would take first place in the 200-yard butterfly and breaststroke relay event, finishing with a time of 2:12.89. In the fifth event, the 200-yard backstroke relay, the Eagles’ team of Reegyn Goyer, Karlie Kurtzman, Hailey Ratliff and Jillianne Gregg would take the victory with a time of 2:13.54, Galion finished in fourth. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Crawford’s Speck, Ratliff, Carman and Gregg would set a new meet record with their first place finish in 1:52.24, Galion finished in third. Goyer, Taylor Price, Hershey and Ratliff would grab a victory in the 200-yard medley relay, winning in 2:17.71, Galion grabbed third place. In the final event, the 200-yard underwater relay, Carman, Krassow, Speck and Gregg picked up another victory, finishing in a time of 2:10.91.

The Spartans would take first in the 850-yard crescendo relay, with Crawford taking second and Galion finishing in fourth. Pleasant won the 300-yard individual medley relay over Crawford and the 400-yard freestyle relay ahead of Crawford and Galion.

The boys team for Colonel Crawford were also victors on Saturday with 70 points. Pleasant and Willard both finished with 44 points and Galion had 42 points.

The Galion team of Issac Niedermier, Braxton Tate, Ben Alstadt and Weston Rose would take the victory in the opening event for the boys, the 850-yard crescendo relay, in a time of 9:38.71, Crawford took second. Nic Motter, Keton Pfeifer, Jake Johnson and Austin Stevens from Crawford would win the 200-yard butterfly and breaststroke relay with a time of 2:00.21, Galion was third. The Eagles sent Nick Barnes, Andrew Johnson, Zach Moritz and Alex Hershey to compete in the 200-yard backstroke relay. They won the event with a time of 2:16.23. The team of Moritz, Marcus Fagan, Keenan Wilson and Stevens won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:54.92, Galion finished in third. The Eagles’ final victory on the day was the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Ken Fernandez, Fagan, Wilson and Jake Johnson won the event with a time of 3:46.26 while Galion took third place. Galion’s Rose, Tate, Alstadt and Niedermier finished ahead of Crawford in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:04.97.

The only two events not won by a Galion or Colonel Crawford team were the 300-yard individual medley relay and the 200-yard underwater relay. Willard was victorious in both of those events.

The Eagles are back in action this evening when they travel to Bucyrus. Galion’s next meet will be on Wednesday Dec.28 at the Galion YMCA pool against the teams from Marion Harding.
