Galion ‘leaders’ share their vision

GALION — Members of The Leader in Me Student Lighthouse team from Galion Intermediate School participated in the annual Crawford: 20/20 Vision State of the Vision event April 18.

Galion students collaborated with Student Lighthouse teams from Bucyrus and Wynford Elementary Schools to present the “7 Habits of The Leader in Me” program. The students also greeted attendees as they entered the building, designed Leader in Me placemats for the tables and prepared other displays spotlighting the 7 Habits in both buildings.

“The event was important to the students because it allowed them to collaborate with other students who are further along in The Leader in Me program,” said Student Lighthouse Team co-advisor Kathryn Nutt. “It also brings recognition to their potential as future leaders in the Galion and Crawford County communities.”

Students involved in Galion’s Student Lighthouse team were selected through an application process. Teachers nominated several students in their classrooms at the start of the 2016-2017 school year who they felt displayed qualities of leadership.

“Those students were asked to fill out an application,” said Nutt. “They answered several personal questions about what it means to them to live the ‘7 Habits’.”

Nutt and co-advisor Sarah Wegesin reviewed the applications and selected approximately 20 students for interviews. After deliberating, 16 students from the Intermediate School and 16 students from the Primary School were chosen to serve on the Student Lighthouse teams in each building.

“The Student Lighthouse teams have undertaken several projects throughout the school year,” said Wegesin. “The students performed several Leader in Me songs and helped serve during the Galion Kiwanis Pancake Day, and they helped organize a ‘Wall of Heroes’ Veteran’s Day tribute.

Members of the Galion Student Lighthouse teams who participated in the Crawford: 20/20 Vision event included: Carly Kent (3rd Grade), Cameron Kuehlman (3rd Grade), Jack Rinehart (4th Grade), Jillian Capretta (4th Grade), Austin Elliot (4th Grade), Nora Harding (5th Grade), Tabitha Conley (5th Grade), Carson Frankhouse (5th Grade), Steven Glew (5th Grade), Maddie Wegesin (5th Grade), Jordan Roderick (5th Grade), Linkon Tyrrell (5th Grade), Ben Rinehart (5th Grade), Hunter Miniard (5th Grade), Jadyn Conley (5th Grade) and Jack Karam (5th Grade).

“I am incredibly proud of the work our Student Lighthouse teams have done to help create a positive environment in both the Primary and Intermediate Schools,” said Superintendent Jim Grubbs. “Our staff, including Ms. Nutt and Mrs. Wegesin, have done an outstanding job encouraging all our students to become better leaders.

“The Galion community should be excited for the future of our community as these young people continue to develop into productive citizens in the coming years.”
