Art projects by Galion students featured at art exhibition

Artwork by two Galion High School students has been selected for display in the 2016 Ohio House of Representatives student art exhibition.

Alexis Chaplin and Allie Awbrey, both sophomores at GHS, are representing the 87th District and Crawford County in the exhibition that opens to the public at 10 a.m. in the Vern Riffe Center for Government and the Arts on Saturday, May 21.

High School Art teacher Linda Wilson became aware of the opportunity through the North Central Ohio Art Education Association. The association recommended its members select two pieces from freshmen or sophomore students because the pieces would be on display for one to two years.

“I decided to enter the work because I felt it would be good for these particular students,” Wilson said. “They both have strong artistic ability for their grade level as sophomores.”

Students were required to complete paperwork about themselves and the pieces, with parent signatures. Chaplin’s pen and ink watercolor still life and Awbrey’s abstract line design were matted by Wilson and sent to Columbus.

“This is a tremendous honor for Alexis, Allie and Mrs. Wilson,” Galion Superintendent Jim Grubbs said. “This recognition is another example of the outstanding fine arts education program provided to students in our district.”

An awards presentation will begin at 10:15 a.m., followed by a reception and viewing of the artwork at 11:00 a.m. May 21. For more information, please contact Linda Wilson at 419-468-6500.
