The Galion City School District Board of Education approved two new programs aimed at increasing student success and helping the Galion community during its regular meeting April 21.

The first measure the Board approved was to create a new Student Success Class. The class will be offered to both freshmen and sophomores during the 2016-2017 school year, and then only freshmen thereafter. The course will be focused on six areas to help prepare students for college or a career.

“This semester-long college and career readiness preparation course will focus on helping students develop the habits of successful high school students and to build a variety of skills that will help throughout college and/or careers,” Superintendent Jim Grubbs said. “The main emphasis of this course is the development of skills and habits that will help students be successful now and in the future.”

The second measure the Board approved was to create a Community Service requirement for all Galion High School students. The creation of this program means the Galion City School District will be the first school district in Crawford County that requires students to conduct service-learning projects to fulfill part of the graduation requirement.

“Service-learning will be a requirement beginning with the class of 2020, requiring students to preform 15 hours of service yearly,” Grubbs said. “The project provided to the community is to address needs such as hunger, homelessness, pollution, and discrimination or other ideas and needs based on our community.”

The Board approved all other agenda items as presented during the meeting. The next regular Board of Education will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Galion Middle School computer lab May 19.
