The Windfall Emanuel United Church of Christ in Galion will be celebrating 175 years of ministry with a special church service 10 a.m. Oct. 18.
Simon Avila will perform a concert, and Rev. Frank Isaacs will be the guest speaker. There will be a carry-in dinner after the church service.
The Windfall church has been located on the corner of Windfall and Biddle roads since 1840. The church records date back to 1840, but the exact year the congregation first met is unknown.
Records show the services were held in a log structure that stood in what is now the Windfall Cemetery. The church went through many changes over the years. In 1969, under the leadership of Rev. Chauncey Woodworth, groundbreaking ceremonies for the current church building were held.
In 1978, a bell tower was added to the church. It was the original bell used from the old church building across the road.
“It’s pretty amazing the church has been here 175 years.” church co-pastor Dreama Caudill said. “My husband (Loyd) and I have had the pleasure of being co-pastors here for 15 years. We have an amazing group of people, good common people and very loving.”
