Galion partners with mCore for voluntary athlete screenings

The Galion Athletic Boosters have partnered with Mobile Cardiac Overview and Risk Evaluation (mCore) to screen Galion athletes for the cardiac conditions and abnormalities that may put them at risk of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). The screenings will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Galion High School conference room near the nurse’s office on Thursday, Dec. 10.

SCA is the #1 killer of student athletes each year, many of which could have been prevented with a simple examination similar to the one provided by mCore. The time requirement is approximately 10-12 minutes per athlete.

Each athlete will be given an EKG and Echo screening and these tests typically cost more than $2000 in a clinical setting. The cost to parents is $75, and can be paid for using a Healthcare Spending Account or Flex Care Spending Account.

The screening age range is (14-22 years). A Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer performs all screenings, and results are read by mCORE Medical Director Dr. Kenneth Berkovitz, M.D., Board Certified in Cardiovascular Disease, Interventional Cardiology and Internal Medicine.

Parents interested in having their student-athlete(s) participate in the screenings must pre-register online at www.mcoreathletes.com. Space is limited to 29 spots. For more information about mCore and SCA, please see this video link – https://vimeo.com/53605191/.
