Two Galion athletes will be continuing their athletic and academic careers after graduating high school this year, as they were slated to sign to compete on a collegiate level on Wednesday.

Drake Barnett has committed to play football for the University of Findlay in Ohio, while Jacob Staiger will play the same sport for the University of Charleston in West Virginia.

The two football seniors finished their last season by making it to the first round of the playoffs. Galion was the runner up in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference with a 5-2 record. Overall, the Tigers were 8-3 and made it to the first round of the playoffs.

“It’s been fun to watch those guys have a nice senior season,” said Galion Athletic Director Kyle Baughn, who knew both students since they were young.

Barnett was a captain and star running back for the Tigers, having made an appearance on the field at the playoffs of the Ohio High School Athletic Association Football championship for all four years. Last season, Barnett played all 11 games, rushing with 208 carries for 1,770 yards and 32 touchdowns. He also had 11 catches for 247 yards and three touchdowns. As a linebacker, he had 107 tackles for the season. Barnett also participated in wrestling and track.

Staiger, a defensive lineman for the Tigers, had 21 tackles. He also participated in track.

A ceremony to commemorate the occasion was scheduled take place at the high school at 9 a.m
