Girls soccer: Four Lady Tigers earn postseason honors

GALION — Four members of the Galion High School girls soccer team have received postseason honors for their performances on the field during the 2021 season.

Seniors Adriana Zeger and Emma Butterfield and juniors Nicole Noble and Ally Staats were honored in voting conducted by coaches in the Mid Ohio Athletic Conference and North Central District, respectively.

Zeger, a versatile athlete who can play any position on the field, was selected to the North Central District second team and was voted first-team All-Mid Ohio Athletic Conference. She finished the season with a team-high 9 goals and 10 assists for 28 points.

Butterfield received honorable mention in the MOAC voting. The outside defender was usually assigned to mark the opposing team’s best player. She scored one goal this season.

Noble and Staats both received honorable mention in the North Central District voting. Noble, a defensive midfielder, finished the season with 4 goals and 2 assists. Staats played in the center of the Galion defense, providing stability for a backline that surrendered the fewest goals in program history.

Galion finished with an overall record of 4-12-1 this season. Head coach Cole Plumb said he is proud of the improvement his program has experienced, especially in 2021.

“We took huge steps this year. We got a new field and won our first ever game on that field. Four wins was the most in school history, so we’re just going to build on that for next year and we get a couple more (players) to improve next year,” said Plumb.

Ontario swept the top individual awards in the North Central District. Junior forward Kyla Spencer was voted player of the year. Warriors head coach Larry Atkinson was honored as coach of the year. Ontario assistant coach Greg Atkinson was voted assistant coach of the year.
