Galion, Crawford swimmers advance to BGSU district meet; Tigers have four sectional champs, Eagles get one

MANSFIELD — During action in the sectional swim meet last week at Malabar Middle School, Galion qualified 11 swimmers — in numerous events — to the district swim meet this weekend at Bowling Green State University. The Tigers appear to be peaking at just the right time, as many swimmers turned in their season’s best times. In the team standings, the boys team was second, the girls fifth.

At Malabar, the Tigers also crowned four sectional champions: Troie Grubbs, who won the girls 50 freestyle in 24.98 second; Alex Dicus won the 200 freestyle in 1:52.44 and the 500 free in 5:06.91 and Ben Alstadt won the boys 50 free in 22.81 seconds.

Also advancing for the Lady Tigers: Grubbs, second in the 100 free in 54.8 seconds; Kaisey Speck, sixth in the 200 free in 2:09.50 and third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.81; Caitlyn Karnes, seventh in 100 butterfly in 1:06.81; Ally Staats, seventh in the 500 free in 6:07.23; Julia Connor, sixth in the 200 IM in 2:45.47 and 12th in 100 back in 1:13.13; Caitlyn Karnes, 13th in the 200 free in 2:16.54; Ally Staats, fifth in 200 IM in 2:40.35; Adriana Zeger, 11th in 100 free in 1:02.67 and 15th in 50 free in 28.40; and Brooklyn O’Brien, 10th in the 500 free in 6:14.36.

All three Galion girls relay teams advanced, each placing fifth: 200 medley (Julia Connor, Brooklyn O’Brien, Caitlyn Karnes, Ally Staats) in 2:09.64; 200 free relay (Speck, Brooklyn O’Brien, Adriana Zeger, Troie Grubbs) in 1:50.79; and the 400 free relay (Speck, Karnes, Zeger, Grubbs) in 4:03.00.

Other boys qualifers were Alstadt, second in the 100 free in 50.98; Caleb Strack, fourth in the 200 IM in 2:15.53 and fourth in the 100 backstroke in 58.12; Jason Oehler, 14th, 200 free, 2:15.53 and 11th, 500 free in 6:27.95; Nathan Barre, seventh, 200 IM in 2:30.60 and 13th, 100 breast in 1:16.09; Justin Lester, eighth, 200 IM in 2:30.92; Isaac Niedermier, 13th, 50 free in 25.42 and ninth, 100 free in 54.63; and Kyler Ratcliff, 13th, 100 back in 1:13.23.

Galion also qualifed all three boys relay teams: 200 free relay, second, (Niedermier, Dicus, Strack, Atstad) in 1:35.81; 400 free relay, second (Niedermier, Strack, Discus, Altstadt) in 3:29.14; and 200 medley relay, eigth (Ratcliff, Barre, Lester, Grayson Willacker) in 2:09.49.

“We had a great day,” Galion coach Ted Temple said. “Our swimmers are setting well in the districts. We expect to put swimmers in the state meet. “

Action in the district meet starts at 3 p.m. Friday.

MANSFIELD — Jayden Ward won the sectional title in the boys 500 freestyle leading a long-list of Eagle qualifiers.

Other include the girls 200 medley relay team of Cassity Vogt, Emma Swisher, Maddy Keller and Katie Jamft; girls 200 freestyle relay (Hanft, Martin, Payne and Vogt; boys 200 freestyle team (Nate Eachus, Branyan Rowland, Keenan Sharrock and Jacob Awbrey) and girls 400 freestyle relay (Hanft, Martin, Ward and Vogt).

Individual qualifiers include three swimmers in the 200 free: Hanft, Jayden Ward and Alison Manko; two in the 200 IM, Swisher and Branyan Rowland; three in the 50 free, Vogt, Abby Martin and Keenan Sharrock; two in 100 butterfly, Maddy Keller and Kayla Payne; two in the 100 backstroke, Abby Martin and Reagan Ritzhaupt; 200 freestyle, Swisher; and 100 backstroke: Rowland.
