Girls tennis: Galion tops Pleasant in regular season finale

The Galion girls tennis team ended regular season play on Thursday with a victory over Pleasant in Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference action at Heise Park. The Tigers knocked off the Spartans, 3-2.

Katelyn Smith posted a 6-2, 6-3 win at first singles. Marisa Brenich dropped her number two singles match, 0-6, 0-6. Kiersten Gifford lost at number three singles, 0-6, 1-6.

Galion swept both doubles matches. Cassidy Ivy and Kaylyn Gimble defeated their Pleasant counterparts, 6-1, 6-4. Dani Court and Tori Chandler knocked off their Spartan opponents, 6-1, 6-2.

Galion opens postseason play Oct. 1 in the Div. II sectional tournament at Shelby High School. The rest of the tournament field includes Bucyrus, Clear Fork, Crestline, Edison, Lexington, Mansfield Senior, Norwalk, Ontario, Mansfield St. Peter’s, Shelby, Upper Sandusky and Willard.

Four singles and four doubles team winners from the sectional tournament will advance to the district semifinals Oct. 7 at Bowling Green State University. The district finals will be played Oct. 10 at Port Clinton High School.
