COLUMBUS – Ohio State linebacker Darron Lee says he knew to expect something big from Vonn Bell on Saturday just by the look on his teammate’s face.

Bell intercepted a pass in the first half of OSU’s 38-0 win over Hawaii on Saturday, picked up a fumble and took it 14 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter and possibly could have had one or two more interceptions.

Lee says that performance might have been inspired by Bell’s disgust at being burned on a short pass that turned into a big play against Virginia Tech on Monday night.

“He was a little upset because they got that one long pass on him. You could see it on his face. If you see it on his face in practice you know something is coming the next game,” Lee said.

Bell confirmed that Lee was correct that he drew some inspiration from the Virginia Tech game.

“I wasn’t pleased. I had a bad taste in my mouth. On the plane ride home, I could hardly sleep. I wanted to come out and make some plays and show guys I wasn’t worried about that game and I put it in the past,” he said.

Bell led Ohio State with six interceptions last season and was second in tackles, but one thing he didn’t do was score a touchdown. Lee scored two and Raekwon McMillan, Eli Apple and Joey Bosa also had TDs on the defense.

But Bell added that line to his resume on Saturday on a ball that Lee first attempted to pick up, but it was knocked away from him and rolled toward Bell.

“I didn’t know the ball was still bouncing around, but I saw it on the ground and scooped and scored,” Bell said.

It was his first touchdown since high school.

He could have turned a very good day into a great day if he had been able to turn his two near-interceptions into picks.

“I was thinking about it while I was out there. I was like, ‘Damn, I left a few on the table,’ ” he said.

NOTES:

RETURN OF THE SUSPENDED: Defensive end Joey Bosa, wide receivers Dontre Wilson, Jalin Marshall and Corey Smith returned after serving one-game suspensions for unspecified violations of team rules.

“I was really excited to get out here and play this week. I was so ready,” Bosa said. “It was hard. But it’s over and I’m back.”

Marshall said, “It was tough. I was very proud of those young wideouts who stepped up. It was great experience for them and a humbling experience for me.”

BASEBALL CHAMPS HONORED: Ohio State’s 1966 College World Series baseball champion team was honored during the third quarter of Saturday’s game.

The team included two Shawnee High School players – starting pitcher Steve Arlin and starting third baseman Jimmy Graham, and relief pitcher Jim Elshire, of Wapakoneta.
