Mansfield Senior defeated Galion by 19 strokes in a non-league girls golf match on Tuesday at the Galion Country Club. The Tygers prevailed, 208-227.
Mansfield Senior’s Morgan Adkins picked up the match medal after shooting 42 on the par 36 back nine at the country club.
Karissa Rinehart led the Tigers by shooting a round of 53. Abby Barre carded 57, finishing her day with a natural birdie on the 18th hole. Shae Ness checked in with a score of 58 and Greer Gledhill shot 59 to round out the top four Galion players.
Reagan Wells finished with a score of 62 and Alexis Chaplin shot 71 against Mansfield Senior.
“Several of them didn’t play as well as they have been, although our team score has come down,” said Galion head coach Mark Barrier.
Rinehart, Ness, Gledhill and Wells each played varsity for Galion in 2014, which marked the first season for girls golf at GHS. The Mid Ohio Athletic Conference did not have enough programs for girls golf to qualify as a league sport last season, but that has changed. Including Galion, six schools field girls golf programs this season. Buckeye Valley, Centerburg, Fairbanks, Jonathan Alder and North Union are the other schools with girls golf.
“We only won two matches all of last year, but, of course, we only had four girls,” Barrier said. “But we’re going to win more this year.”
Barrier, now in his 31st year as the pro at the Galion County Club, has provided instruction for Galion prep golf teams throughout his time in the area.
The Tigers face Shelby in a home match on Thursday. Tee time is 4:30 p.m.
After the match against the Whippets, Galion is idle until next Tuesday when the Tigers play host to Norwalk at the Galion Country Club. Tee time is 4:30 p.m.
