Knights best Pirates to remain undefeated

CARDINGTON — The Northmor Golden Knights boys basketball starts that 2017-2018 campaign at 5-0 overall and are now 2-0 within the Knox-Morrow Athletic Conference after a road victory against the Cardington Pirates on Friday; 66-43.

A high scoring opening quarter saw the visiting Knights take the early 21-15 advantage and from there, they would never look back. Northmor went on to outscore Cardington in the second frame, 13-7, to head into halftime up by a score of 34-22. After intermission, the visitors tacked on an additional 15 points and allowed just five to stretch their lead to 49-27 en route to their eventual 23-point victory.

The senior duo of Meechie Johnson and Brock Pletcher scored 18 points apiece to lead the way for the Golden Knights on Friday. A third senior, Kyle Kegley also finished in double figures for the contest with 14 points. Tyler Kegley chipped in eight points for Northmor while Lane Bachelder, Blake Miller, Eason Neal and Ryland Thomas finished up the Knights scoring with two points apiece.

Cardington’s senior captain, Garrett Wagner was the only member of the home team to reach double digits in scoring, pouring in 18 points.

Additional stats for Northmor were: Team- 28/58 (48%) total field goals, 24/46 (52%) from the interior, 4/12 (33%) from the perimeter, 6/8 (75%) free throws, 36 total rebounds (13O, 23D), 12 assists, 12 steals, 5 blocks and 9 turnovers; Johnson- 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, 1 block; Pletcher- 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, 1 block; K. Kegley- 4 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 block; T. Kegley- 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block; Bachelder- 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block; Miller- 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals and Neal- 2 rebounds.

Team stats for the Cardington Pirates were: 16/45 (35%) total field goals, 6/20 (30%) from inside, 10/25 (40%) from outside, 1/3 (33%) free throws, 25 total rebounds (6O, 19D), 9 assists, 3 steals, 0 blocks and 12 turnovers.

Northmor will play three conference games this week, starting with a home contest against the East Knox Bulldogs on Tuesday, December 19. On Friday, December 22, they will head out to Mount Gilead for a meeting with the hosting Indians. Saturday, another road trip, this time to Danville, will pair the Knights with the Blue Devils.
