Knights open season with a pair of wins

BUCYRUS — After different results on opening night, the Northmor Golden Knights and the Bucyrus Redmen met in a non-league, boys basketball contest at Bucyrus High School on Saturday, December 2.

Bucyrus was defeated at Galion on Friday, December 1; 60-54. Northmor won on their home floor in a nail biter; 38-37 over the Pleasant Spartans.

After the two squads met on Saturday, it would be a 2-0 start to the season for the Knights as they handed the Redmen a lopsided defeat to the tune of 72-33. Bucyrus drops to 0-2 on the year.

From the opening tip, it was all Northmor. After one quarter of play, Bucyrus found themselves trailing by a score of 26-5. The second quarter saw the Knights expanding their lead and would head to the locker room at the half, up 44-14. Northmor piled on 21 additional points in the third to Bucyrus’ six and would finally be outscored by the Redmen in the fourth; 13-7.

Brock Pletcher turned in a 20-point performance on Saturday to lead the way for the visiting Knights. Pletcher would also record three assists and four steals.

Meechie Johnson, Tyler Kegley and Blake Miller would also finish in double figures for the contest. Meechie finished with 15 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Kegley recorded 14 points to go along with five rebounds, an assist, a steal and two blocked shots. Miller hit five buckets to chip in 10 points as well as four boards and a steal.

Other stats for Northmor were: Team- 29/62 (46%) total field goals, 6/18 (33%) three-point field goals, 8/9 (88%) free-throws, 33 rebounds (14 O, 19 D), 11 assists, 17 steals, 5 blocks and just 8 turnovers; Kyle Kegley- 6 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks; Nick Polewski- 5 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal; Eason Neal- 2 points; Lane Bachelder- 4 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block; Ryland Thomas- 1 rebound and Andy Tupps- 1 rebound.

Ryan Evans was the top scorer for Bucyrus on Saturday evening. After dropping in 25 points against the Galion squad Friday, Evans managed 15 points against the Northmor defense on Saturday and was the only Redmen player to reach double-digit figures.

As a team the Redmen shot 13/32 (40%) total from the field, including a 2/12 (16%) effort from three-point range and were 5/6 (83%) from the free-throw stripe. Bucyrus finished the game with 21 total rebounds (1 O, 20 D), two assists, three steals and 24 turnovers.

Northmor will host the visiting Colonel Crawford Eagles on Wednesday, December 6.

Friday, December 1 vs Pleasant Spartans

GALION — The winter boys basketball season began for the Golden Knights on Friday evening when they played host to the Pleasant Spartans of the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference.

Northmor would hold on to defeat the visiting Spartans in the low-scoring affair; 38-37.

Tyler Kegley and Meechie would score a dozen points apiece to lead the home team. Kegley also managed seven rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block in the victory. Meechie grabbed four boards and notched one assist, one steal and a block for Northmor.

Other stats for the Knights were: Team- 14/44 (31%) total field goals, 1/11 (9%) three pointers, 9/20 (45%) free-throws, 36 rebounds (12 O, 24 D), 4 assists, 7 steals, 5 blocks and 15 turnovers; Kyle Kegley- 5 points, 9 rebounds, 1 steal, 2 blocks; Pletcher- 5 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals; Miller- 2 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block; Neal- 2 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal and Bachelder- 2 rebounds.

Patrick Blubaugh scored 13 points off the bench to lead all Pleasant scorers on Friday.
