Kayley Gimbel advances to state tennis tourney

BOWLING GREEN — Kayley Gimbel, the last remaining tennis player from the successful 2017 Galion Lady Tigers squad, was on the campus of Bowling Green State University on Wednesday to compete in the district tennis tournament.

Gimbel’s opening-round match began at 10 a.m. as she faced Serena Bruno, a senior from Sandusky Perkins High School. Kayley would oust Bruno by a score of 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the second-round and end Bruno’s season.

In the next round, Gimbel was fitted against Clare Caywood, a junior from St. Mary’s Memorial. Caywood advanced to the match-up with Gimbel by defeating her first opponent, Priya Bhatt of Ottawa Hills; 6-4, 6-2. Caywood’s season would be ended by Kayley as Gimbel marched her way to the district semi-finals; 6-1, 6-3.

By advancing to the semis, Gimbel has also qualified for the state tournament. The top four finishers from each district advance to the state matches, held at Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.

But first, Gimbel will meet up with sophomore Ava McQuillin from Toledo Central Catholic. McQuillin has breezed her way to the semis with a first-round win of 6-0, 6-1 and a second-round victory of 6-0, 6-0. In the other semi-final match, Sylvia Goldsmith of Lexington will meet with Aliza Lankenau of Napoleon. The semi-finals will be played on Saturday, Oct. 14, starting at 10 am. These matches will be held at Port Clinton High School.

The state tournament will begin on Friday, Oct. 20 and continue on Saturday, Oct. 21. The address for the Lindner Family Tennis Center is: 5460 Courseview Drive, Mason, OH 45040.
