GALION — The 2017 girls tennis season was set to begin for the Galion Lady Tigers on Friday, August 11 with a match against the Shelby Lady Whippets. However, the weather would get in the way and the match postponed. On Saturday, Galion was to compete in the Ontario Invitational but once again the weather did not cooperate.

So instead, this year’s edition of the Galion girls tennis team began their fall season at home in Heise Park against the Crestline Lady Bulldogs. The Tigers picked right up where they left off a season ago and defeated the Lady ‘Dogs; 5-0.

Kayley Gimbel, back again this season at first singles, and Jalyn Oswald at third singles, reezed by their Crestline competition in straight sets; 6-0, 6-0. Katherine Talbott, competing at second singles for coaches Bob Roesch and Terry Gribble, won convincingly as well, 6-1, 6-0.

The first doubles tandem of Danielle Schneider and Kiersten Gifford worked to a straight-set victory, 6-0, 6-0. At second doubles, Katie Baughn and Ellie Chandler won 6-2, 6-2.

Galion starts the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference season on Tuesday, Aug. 15 when they travel to Marion to meet up with the Pleasant Lady Spartans. MOAC play will continue Thursday with a trip to River Valley to face-off against the Lady Vikings.
