Eagles’ boys share district crown, girls runner-up

BUCYRUS — With the Division III Northwest District track and field meet now complete, the Colonel Crawford Eagles track teams will now focus on the Region X and XI track meets.

The Colonel Crawford boys squads were the co-champions of their district with Crestview, scoring 86 team points over the two days in Bucyrus. In that time frame, the Eagles claimed four total event championships and will send three relay teams and four individuals to the regional meet at Tiffin Columbian High School this week.

Brad Bauer, Braxton James, Nick Studer and Chad Johnson got the winning started for Crawford, taking the district title in the 4×800-meter relay race. The foursome finished with a winning time of 8:32.72 to punch their regional ticket. Also on their way to regionals is the 4×100 team of Rowland, Harley Shaum, Owen Kocher and Dylan David. This group finished third overall with a time of 45.47. David, James, Brody Martin and Johnson also finished third in the 4×400 to keep their postseason alive, crossing the finish line with a time of 3:36.91. In the 4×200, Rowland, Jacob Rahm, David and Shaum just missed a trip to Tiffin, finishing fifth in 1:36.04.

Johnson and Bauer will be representing the storied Eagles distance program in individual events as well. Johnson set a new personal and school record time en route to easily winning the 1600-meter run, finishing in a time of 4:12.09. Bauer took first place honors in the 3200 ahead of Johnson, winning the race in 9:52.12. Johnson was runner-up, crossing the finish in 10:14.70.

Qualifying for Crawford in the field events were Jaret Tinkey and Shaum. Tinkey earned the district championship title in the discus with a toss of 151’6” with teammate Drake Delong taking seventh (137’9”). Shaum cleared 5’10” in the high jump which was good for fourth place. Rounding out field event scoring was Tinkey, earning eighth in the shot put (43’10.5”) and Alex Mutchler, finishing sixth in the pole vault by clearing 10’.

James finished fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:07.46, Rahm was seventh in the 300-meter hurdles at 44.99 and Rowland snagged a point, finishing eighth in the 200-meter dash to finish up the Eagles’ scoring.

Colonel Crawford’s qualifiers will now compete at the Division III Region X meet at Tiffin Columbian High School on Wednesday May 24 (4 pm) and Friday May 26 (5 pm) with hopes of making the state meet next Friday and Saturday.

The Lady Eagles were the district runner-up in Bucyrus with 81.5 team points. Crawford will be advancing two relay teams and eight individuals to the regional meet this week.

Pierce Krassow, Kirsten Vehrs, Sam Mutchler and Reegan Goyer finished as the runner-up in the 4×100 to advance on in the postseason. This group crossed the finish line with a time of 52.21. Also advancing in the relays for Crawford are the members of the 4×800 relay team. This group, comprised of Courtney Britt, Emily Kemper, Kari Teglovic and Anna Reffey finished in the fourth position in a time of 10:23.43.

The members of those relay squads are also advancing on the individual level following strong performances throughout the two-day event.

Reffey and Kemper provided a strong second and third place showing in the 3200, respectively. Reffey earned the runner-up spot in 11:40.11 and Kemper, third, with a time of 12:06.22. Reffey will also be moving on in the 1600 after a third place finish in 5:26.01. Kemper missed out on regionals, finishing fifth in a time of 5:34.67. As for the middle distance, Britt snagged third to advance with a qualifying time of 2:23.96.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Vehrs continued to roll with a fourth place finish in 17.53. Teammate Claire Ehmann finished behind her in fifth with a time of 17.85, just missing the cut for regionals. Goyer will be moving on for the Lady Eagles in individual competition as well after taking fourth in the 100 (13.18).

Crawford will also be sending three individuals to compete in the field events at regionals.

Mutchler finished as the runner-up in the high jump, clearing 5’2” while Drew Krassow scored sixth place points (4’10”). In the discus, Jilliane Gregg threw 104’7” to earn a third place finish and a trip to Lancaster. Joining Mutchler and Gregg in the field events will be Sarah Campbell. Campbell cleared 8’ in the pole vault to claim third place honors. Mutchler also finished eighth in the long jump (14’2.5”) and Pierce Krassow took eighth in the shot put (31’8”) to wrap the scoring for the Lady Eagles.

The Division III Region XI meet for the girls squad will be held at Lancaster Fairfield Union High School on Wednesday May 24 (5 pm) and Friday May 26 (5 pm).

Crestline’s tracksters were also in competition in Bucyrus.

The boys had a fifth place finisher and a pair of eight place finishes for the meet.

In the long jump, sophomore Davon Triplett claimed fifth with a jump of 19’10”. Max Anatra finished eighth in the 110-hurdles (17.88) and Garrisen Almanson, eighth in the 100 (12.07).

For the girls, their only points came on a sixth place finish by Alex Miller in the 100-meter. Miller finished the event in 13.94.
