CASTALIA — After a first-round bye in the Division III Lexington District tournament, the Galion Lady Tigers softball team traveled to Castalia to meet up with the Margaretta Polar Bears with a sectional championship on the line.

The No. 2 seeded Lady Polar Bears upended the Bucyrus Lady Redmen 14-4 on May 9 to advance to the championship game. Galion made sure that was where the Margaretta tournament run came to an end, beating the Bears on their home diamond by a final tally of 6-5.

Madelyn Thomas improved her season record to 12-7 by pitching a complete game on Friday while allowing 12 hits, surrendering five runs and striking out four batters. Thomas had a multi-hit game at the plate to help her cause. Nevaeh Clark was the other Lady Tigers hitter with two or more hits on the day.

Nicole Thomas and Dani Schieber had a double apiece in the three-run second inning for Galion. The Tigers would also tack on two runs in the visiting half of the third to take the lead at that point, 5-4.

The Lady Tigers kept the runners from crossing the plate again until the bottom of the seventh when Margaretta plated one and came up short, 6-5.

On Tuesday May 16, the Galion squad will host the Wynford Lady Royals in non-tourney play. The game at Klehm Field will serve as the Senior Night and will conclude with the Senior Slide post-game.

Galion is now 15-10 in 2017 and will continue their tournament march on Wednesday May 17 when they travel to Lexington High School to take on the Willard Lady Flashes. Willard won their sectional final by beating Crestview 3-2 on Friday. The Flashes and Tigers will play at 5 pm.
