VanBuskirk, Myers win Galion triathlon

The Galion Community Center YMCA hosted its first-ever triathlon on July 25 as part of the inaugural YMCAs of Mid-Ohio Triathlon Series.

The Bucyrus Area YMCA triathlon kicked off the series on May 23. The Marion Family YMCA will host the final installment of the series on Aug. 15.

The Galion triathlon featured a 660-yard swim in the Heise Park pool, a 9-mile bicycle ride along the outskirts of the city and a 5K run.

Kevin VanBuskirk and Jenni Myers emerged as the winners in the male and female categories, respectively. VanBuskirk’s time was 59 minutes, 28 seconds. Myers completed the three legs of the triathlon in 1 hour, 9 minutes, 47 seconds.

Following is the breakdown of VanBuskirk’s times for each leg of the race: swim, 8:28; bicycle, 28:02; 5K run, 22:04.

Myers’ times for each event were as follows: swim, 9:55; bicycle, 33:21; 5K run, 25:17.

The rest of the top five male competitors at Galion were Tim Gribble (1:00.33), Robert Chipka (1:05:10), Kerry Keane (1:05:43) and Matthew Maring (1:07:56).

The remainder of the top five female competitors were Jamie Chipka (1:15:15), Emma Dunham (1:17:33), Liz Keller (1:18:21) and Danielle Clime (1:27:51).

A total of 26 athletes competed in the Galion leg of the series. The average time per competitor was 1:21:05.

After two legs of the series, VanBuskirk and Gribble are tied for first place in the men’s standings. Each athlete has 30 points.

Kerry Keane and Robert Chipka are tied for second with 13 points each. Mark McCoy is alone in third place with four points.

Mike Baldridge, Stephen Noblet, Joshua Shifley and Robert Weisbrodt are tied for fourth with two points apiece.

On the ladies’ side, Jenni Myers is alone atop the standings with 23 points. Miriam Paulus is second with 15 points. Emma Dunham is in third place with 11 points, and Sherri Branum is in fourth place with 10 points.

Liz Keller and Tayor Wirsche are tied for fifth with five points each. Danielle Clime is in sixth place with three points and Erin Fishpaw is in seventh with two points.
