Colonel Crawford swimmers eye state meet berths

NORTH ROBINSON — The Colonel Crawford swim teams is sending 12 swimmers to the district tournament at Bowling Green State University on Friday afternoon.

Representing the girls squad are: Jillianne Gregg, Pierce and Drew Krassow, Hailey Ratliff, Chloe Carman, Kennedy Speck and Karlie Kurtzman.

Gregg was the sectional champion in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.21 and will enter Friday as the No. 4 overall seed in Division II. Gregg also qualified individually in the 100-yard butterfly by finishing fifth last Saturday at the Mansfield sectional in a time of 1:08.00. On Friday, she will be the 20th seed in the race.

Pierce Krassow also qualified in two individual races for the Lady Eagles. P.Krassow will participate in the 50-yard freestyle after earning the berth by finishing sixth last Saturday in a time of 26.15. She will also take to the pool in the 100-yard freestyle after qualifying by finishing fifth overall at Malabar Middle School in a time of 57.75. P.Krassow will be the No. 20 seed in the 50-free and the 16th seed in the 100-free.

Drew Krassow finished in second place at the sectional championship to qualify for districts in the 100-yard breaststroke. D.Krassow will enter the race at BGSU as the No. 12 seed after swimming the event in 1:12.44 last weekend.

The Crawford girls finished second in all three team relay races in the sectional.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Pierce Krassow, Drew Krassow, Gregg and Ratliff swam to their runner-up finish with a time of 1:57.73 and will enter Friday as the No.9 seed. P.Krassow, Chloe Carman, Ratliff and Gregg finished last weekend with a time of 1:46.16 to qualify for districts competition and enter as the No. 8 seed. The final event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay, will see the team of Ratliff, Carman, Speck and Kurtzman trying for a state berth. This relay team swam the event last weekend in a time of 4:12.22 and enter districts as the No. 23 seed.

The Eagles’ boys swim team will be represented by: Jake Johnson, Nic Motter, Ken Fernandez, Alex Hershey and Keton Pfeifer.

Johnson finished in third place in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 23.12 to qualify for the district meet and will enter as the No. 12 seed. With a time of 1:03.85, Johnson also qualified for the 100-yard breaststroke event after finishing runner-up in the sectional meet. In this event, Johnson will be the No. 5 overall seeded swimmer.

Motter took third place in the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.04) at the sectional tournament to land a district berth as the No. 16 seed in the event. In the 500-yard freestyle, Motter earned another third place finish with a time of 5:18.87 to qualify for districts as the No. 9 seed.

Fernandez will also be in the pool for the 500-yard freestyle after his sixth place finish last Saturday in the Mansfield sectional. Fernandez finished with a time of 5:38.36 to land the No. 27 seed in districts.

The boys team will also be sending their 200- and 400- yard freestyle relay teams to Bowling Green.

Hershey, Fernandez, Motter and Johnson finished sixth overall at sectionals (1:41.22) to enter districts as the No. 20 overall seed. Pfeifer will join Fernandez, Motter and Johnson at BGSU for the 400-free relay. This group earned the No. 12 seed for Friday’s districts competition after finished fifth overall last weekend in a time of 3:39.47.

In the districts competition, the top two swimmers earn automatic bids to the state tournament in Canton next week.

The at-large bids should be finalized by Sunday, Feb. 19. Results from the district meet will be online at galioninquirer.com soon as they are available and will be in print in next Wednesday’s edition of the paper. Updates on the meet can be found on Twitter @GalionSportsGuy.
