Northmor wrestling looks to continue their dominance this season

GALION — The Northmor Golden Knights are a wrestling powerhouse. That powerhouse is lead by head coach Scott Carr, now entering his ninth season with Northmor.

The 2015-2016 saw the Knights going 9-3 in dual meets en route to a Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference Blue Division title. A MOAC title isn’t anything new to Carr as he has lead Northmor to six of them in his eight years as head coach (all but 2011-2012 and 2008-2009). The Knights were not satisfied with just another league title as they went on to win both sectional and district championships last winter.

From last season’s successful team, the Knights will start this year without three key wrestlers. Brad Baker is gone to graduation as are 2016 state meet qualifiers Griffin Jenkins and Jake Farley. There is, however, quite a bit of talent returning to the mats for the 2016-2017 campaign. Conan Becker will return this year after finishing fifth at state last season and will be joined by two fellow state qualifiers; Aaron Kits and Jake Neer (2-time state qualifier). Also back for Carr are district qualifiers from a year ago, Nathan Price and Mason Burger and Matthew Ross whom placed at the district meet.

This experience, as well as some key incoming freshmen will allow Northmor to be competitive again this season.

When asked of the goals for this winter, Carr summed it up in a few words, “make it to the state dual finals, win the MOAC, repeat as sectional and district champs and finish in the top 10 in the state.”

Regular season competition starts for the Golden Knights on Tuesday Dec.6 when they hit the road to Upper Sandusky to meet up with the host Rams, the Marion Harding Presidents and the Mansfield Senior Tygers. On Wednesday Dec.14, the Knights will host their first home quad meet, welcoming Bucyrus, River Valley and Galion to town.
