Vintage cars race at Mid-Ohio

There was beautiful weather all weekend for the Vintage Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio, which ran at the Morrow County sports car course from June 24-26.

Many races were contested during the weekend, both in group competition and in endurance events. Each of the groups raced on both Saturday and Sunday.

In the Groups One and Three race on Saturday, George Balbach took first place, Vic Skirmants was second and Robert Heib ran third. On Sunday, the top two places remained the same, while Ceasar Cone finished third.

For Group Two, Bruce Hamilton won Saturday’s race, while Bob Hatle was second and Robert Burnside took third. Hatle claimed the checkered flag on Sunday, with Todd Strong finishing second and Kim Madrid running third.

In Saturday’s Groups Four and Five race, Graham Adelman finished first. Doc Bundy ran third and Ken Mennella placed third. Bundy finished first Sunday, as Adelman was second and Mennella repeated at third.

Peter Klutt won Saturday’s Groups Six and 12 race, while Curt Vogt and Mark Rift took second and third, respectively. On Sunday, Andre Ahrle finished first. Vogt was second again, while Shawn Dewey placed third.

Saturday’s Group Seven race went to Justin Frick, while Steven Durst was second and Joey Selmants ran third. Frick claimed another win on Sunday, with Selmants moving up to second and Mark Coombs finishing third.

Craig Chima won the Group Eight race held on Saturday, with Bob Leitzinger placing second and Lisa Hansen taking third. Chima and Leitzinger repeated at first and second Sunday, while Denny Wilson moved into the third spot.

The Group Nine race on Saturday was won by Ryan Norman, while Bruce Hamilton placed second and Charles Monk was third. Sunday saw Norman repeat on top of the podium, while Monk was third and Jacek Mucha finished third.

In the Groups 10 and 11 race held Saturday, Robert Gewirtz finished first. Bill Heifner followed in second and Aaron Lewis was third. Jacek Mucha took the checkered flag Sunday, while Gewirtz ran second and Lewis followed in third.

While most of the racing took place Saturday and Sunday, there was one event contested on Friday. In the SAAC race, Curt Vogt placed first, while Scott Hackerson ran second and Andre Ahrle placed third.

Also on Saturday was the International GT endurance race. The team of Mark Sandridge and Joe Varde completed 51 laps in 80 minutes to take first place by a full lap. John Mauro was second, while Steven Hill took third.

There were two shorter International GT races. On Saturday, Sandridge and Varde won, while Christopher Haehn placed second and Todd Sloan was third. Then, on Sunday, the same two cars ran first and second, while John Mauro finished third.

Opening Sunday’s racing was the Vintage/Classic endurance race, which was won by James Stiehr, who ran 32 laps in one hour. Both second (Lisa Hansen) and third (Dennis Firestone) also completed that many laps.

The Historic GT-GTP endurance race took place later that day, with Ryan Norman running 59 laps over the 90-minute event to win. The team of Bruce Hamilton and Tonis Kasemets was second and the duo of Steven Durst and Tyler Pappas finished third.

In the Group Nine races at the Vintage Grand Prix, Ryan Norman picked up a pair of wins. He also won one the endurance races contested during the event.

Craig Chima won twice in the Group Eight races at Mid-Ohio during the Vintage Grand Prix.

Another double winner at Mid-Ohio was Justin Frick, who claimed the checkered flag in both Group Seven races.
