The recent cold snap may give be giving local residents the chills but for Snow Trails, the colder the better.

The popular ski resort, located at 3100 Possum Run Road, has had a spike in business since the drastic dip in temperatures the around the second half of January, according to Snow Trails spokesman Nate Wolleson.

“You can tell there was a pent-up demand,” he said. “People really started coming on weekends and even weekdays.”

The slopes at Snow Trails opened on Jan. 3; last year they opened on Nov. 28. Despite the delay, Wolleson said he still expects Snow Trails to have a 60 to 70 day season: The average season for skiing, snowboarding and snowtubing is about 90 days. He added that the season usually extends from the middle of December to the middle of March, depending on the weather and the level of interest of visiting winter sports enthusiasts.

“Right now interest is peaking and it will continue to grow,” Wolleson said. “We just had our MLK weekend, which is always strong.”

Snow Trails makes its own snow using machines called “snow guns” as needed to help build a stockpile of snow to last throughout its season. Wolleson said Snow Trails draws from the last base of snow to maintain the top layer on the slows and make it a smooth skiing surface.
