Bucyrus students set to put spelling skills to the test

While the winter season may bring snow and colder temperatures, it also brings the start of the spelling bee “season” for students across the country. Since December, Bucyrus Elementary and Middle School students have been exercising their spelling bee skills with several goals in mind.

The first exercise was a spelling test given to students in grades four through eight in the district. The top spellers in each grade level were recognized in their respective building. Three spellers in each grade level 4-8 were awarded certificates for their top grade level honor. Malia Posey, the Bucyrus District Champion, will have the opportunity to participate in a Scripps Online Spelling Bee competing with other Ohio students in February.

Following a district-wide spelling test with the 15 top grade level spellers in grades 4-8, seven total winning spellers were determined to qualify for the local bee. The following Bucyrus City School students have been invited to compete in the Crawford County Spelling Bee at 7:00 p.m. at Galion Middle School Jan. 14. Malia Posey (fourth grade), Allison Fraser (fifth grade), Rayne Wilson (sixth grade), Ashley Davis (sixth grade), Rosalyn Johnson (sixth grade), Alex Wion (seventh grade) and Gunner Hofer (eighth grade) will represent the district in the Crawford County Spelling Bee. Students have met with Gifted Coordinator, Carrie Wood, to receive certificates, study packets and review Spelling Bee Guidelines.

The top twelve finishers in the Crawford County Spelling Bee will advance to the Tri-County Spelling Bee. This event will be held at the Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center in Mansfield Feb. 11.

“I want to commend all of our students for their hard work in preparing for the spelling bee,” Superintendent Kevin Kimmel said. “I wish all our students the best of luck at this year’s county spelling bee.”
