Winners announced in Bucyrus Christmas decorating contest

For the second year in a row, The Positive Seekers hosted a Christmas Decorating Contest in Bucyrus and this year, the Gingery family took the first place prize in the residential category.

“We are so excited to win the contest sponsored by The Positive Seekers and our amazing local businesses,” said Dale Gingery, who decorated his home at 845 Prospect St. along with his wife, Erin. “Decorating our home for the holidays brings us so much joy and our 20-month-old son is really enjoying the music, lighting and animated Santa this year.”

The Positive Seekers group was founded by Bucyrus resident Carolyn Shireman nearly two years ago in an effort to bring more positive activities to the community and put smiles on people’s faces. The group sponsors events throughout the year such as the Hee Haw Hayride and Chili Cook-off.

Joe Graham, president of The Positive Seekers, said there were fewer entries in the contest this year but more people throughout the city seem to be decorating their homes and businesses this holiday season.

“We had fewer entrants this year, but we noticed the neighborhoods around our repeat entrants were more decorated. It’s nice seeing people really participating in the Christmas spirit,” Graham said.

The runner-up in the residential category went to the Durham family at 844 Rogers St.

“It was very hard to pick a winner this year. The entrants really challenged us with their creativity,” Graham said.

Graham said all of the prizes for the contest came via donations from local businesses.

“We had a lot of merchants that donated really good prizes. For their $10 entry fees, first and second place divided almost $500 in area merchandise and gift certificates,” Graham said.

The grand prize winner in the business category went to Maplecrest Assisted Living, 717 Rogers St., with a $50 check going to the charity of their choice, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. The second place winner is Altercare of Bucyrus, located at 1929 Whetstone St.

Graham said The Positive Seekers will hold the contest again next year.

“We’ll be doing this again next year, maybe with a new twist or two, so “like” The Positive Seekers on Facebook and watch for announcements,” Graham said.
