Deputies arrest man who fled SR-598 crash scene

LEESVILLE — Crawford County sheriff’s deputies arrested a male subject who fled the scene of a crash on Sunday night in Jefferson Township.

Lonnie Chaney, 43, was arrested on a warrant on indictment for felony possession of drugs issued in Crawford County, according to a press release from the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office reported that Chaney was driving southbound on State Route 598 near Leesville Road when the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta he was operating ran off the roadway, striking a road sign and then a tree. The vehicle was ripped in half, according to the press release. The crash was called in to Crawford County 911 at 7:55 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 26 and deputies responded to the scene.

Chaney fled the scene when law enforcement officers arrived, prompting a search of the local area. He was later located in Leesville and taken into custody. He was then transported to Avita Galion Community Hospital for treatment of a head injury and was released. Deputies transported Chaney to the Crawford County Justice Center after he received treatment.

Deputies are still investigating the crash.

Officers from the Crestline Police Department and troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the scene and assisted with the search for the suspect.

The Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Department and Portsmouth Ambulance also responded to the scene.
