Gardeners preparing for the holidays

North End Garden Club met for its November meeting at the First Lutheran Church with Patty Rice Groth as the hostess. Patty Roston from Toni’s Flowers was the speaker walking the group through the steps to make a simple yet beautiful floral arrangement for the holidays. Roston used a variety of greens from her own garden as the base of the arrangement, adding a red candle and inserting red and white carnations before finishing with bbabies’ reath.

President Shirley Fearn conducted a business meeting during which committee reports were given. Several members planned to get together to make new bows for the green roping placed on the fence at the east end of Heise Park for the holidays. East Park will also receive some festive holiday decorations. A seasonal floral arrangement was displayed; it will be placed at the Galion Public Library along with a copy of the 2015-16 program book for North End Garden Club. Mary Ellen Heacock, Regional Director for Region 7 reported on the recent regional meeting attended by several members at Apple Valley, Howard, Ohio. The next regional meeting in April will be hosted by the clubs of Crawford, Morrow and Marion Counties, of which NEGC is a part.

The club has been approached by Galion Big 4 Depot, Inc. inviting NEGC’s participation in the improvements to the grounds of the depot using grant funds. Carol Kable will act as a liaison between the two organizations. Kable has been involved with the depot group since its inception.

Patty Rice Groth reported that she had worked with Sandy Baldy in planting hostas and ground covers around one of the beech trees on the Gill House premises. Lilies will be planted later on the west side of Gill House.
