Two Bucyrus men die when kayaks overturn

UPPER SANDUSKY — Two Bucyrus brothers died Sunday evening when their kayaks overturned in the Sandusky River near the dam in Upper Sandusky.

A 911 call was placed to the Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office around 7:15 p.m. by Tina Zornes who said her husband, Lewis W. Zornes, 46, and his brother, Billy R. Zornes, 45, were in Kayaks that flipped over and she could not locate them in the water.

The Upper Sandusky Police Department, along with the Upper Sandusky Fire Department, Wyandot County EMS, Water Rescue Team and Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the call and after a lengthy search, found the two men in the river near Sycamore Street and Pleasant View Drive in Upper Sandusky.

The incident remains under investigation by the Upper Sandusky Police Department and Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Watercraft.
