Akron Children’s seeks applicants for summer scholars program

Akron Children’s Hospital is accepting applications for its Summer Pediatric Research Scholars program for 2016.

The 10-week program is for college sophomores and juniors planning careers in health care professions, including medicine, nursing, pharmacy and research.

Students begin the program in early-June and commit to working at least 24 hours per week at the hospital. Each student is assigned a mentor and will work on a specific research project. Projects may focus on ways to improve the healthcare experience for patients, enhance patient safety or quality of care, or evaluate the effectiveness of a clinical intervention.

Additionally, students have opportunities to shadow clinical teams in various hospital departments, ranging from the neonatal intensive care unit to surgery. Each Wednesday students convene as a class to learn about study design, research methods, biostatistics and pediatric healthcare career opportunities. At the conclusion of the program research scholars present their project findings to peers, mentors, and family members.

A stipend is paid as a scholarship to each student’s college or university. Participants are responsible for their own housing and accommodations.

The applications, which must include two reference letters, are being accepted through Nov. 13. To apply, visit www.akronchildrens.org/sprs

A selective interview process will be conducted. Previous formal research experience is not required.
