Stellar Robotics is kicking off its second season with the Mahoning Valley Robotics Challenge 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 26 at Warren G. Harding High School, 860 Elm Road in Warren.

The event is open to the public.

“(The challenge) is a good way for people to check out the team.” Stellar Robotics Team Facilitator Chantal Deyoe said. “We build robots from the ground up. (The robots) weigh about 120 pounds and are over 78 inches tall.”

The team meets 6-9 p.m. every Monday at North Central State College’s Kehoe Center in Shelby. The group is open to all high school students.

“We have new high school students who started this year,” Deyoe said. “But we would like to have more join.”

The program is seeking adults with a variety of skills to join the program.

“We are looking for adult volunteers at all levels to mentor teams.” Deyoe said. “We need people who will help lead and mentor. It’s not only people with technical skills or STEM skills (Understanding Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) that we can use. It’s like running a business, we can use all types of skills. We need administrative, public speakers and writers to work with the students.”

Another need is for others to work with younger students who are interested in robotics.

“We also offer individual programs for junior high and elementary students.” Deyoe said. “But there are not enough adults for the younger programs to add more teams.”

Stellar Robotics is also looking for financial sponsors to help pay for the group’s upcoming competition registration fees, which are due by mid-November.
