Friday crash, shooting in Bucyrus under investigation

Bucyrus police officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Union Ave. Friday night at 11:54 p.m. regarding a reckless driver that was driving on private property off the roadway and crashed into a fence and fled from the area.

Reports indicated the suspect truck, a black Ford F150, was stopped on Whetstone St. near the fairgrounds and the officers discovered that a passenger had been shot and required medical attention. EMS responded to transport the individual to Bucyrus Hospital for treatment.

Police said the truck was impounded for investigation of the crash on Union Avenue and the shooting. Officers investigated the scene on Union Avenue and one man was taken into custody and a shotgun was recovered.

According to reports, the driver of the pickup truck, Laverne P. Lanko, 35 of North Ridgeville, Ohio was arrested for OVI and Criminal Damaging. The injured passenger, Tyler J. Wilmouth of Toledo, was treated and released from Grant Hospital in Columbus after transport there from Bucyrus, police said, adding the third occupant of the involved vehicle, John M. Woolheater, 34, Conneaut Lake, Pennsylvania, did not report injury. The investigation is ongoing.
