Lady Tigers begin with a volleyball win

GALION — On Tuesday evening, the Galion Lady Tigers began their 2017 regular season when they welcomed the Bellevue Lady Red to their home gymnasium.

The young Tigers were tested but emerged victorious, defeating the visitors in four sets; 25-18, 18-25, 25-18 and 25-16. Galion starts the season at 1-0 and will kick-off league play on Thursday evening on the road against the Pleasant Lady Spartans.

Marisa Gwinner and Jaden Ivy fueled the net attack for the home team against Bellevue. Gwinner finished the contest with 14 kills while Ivy chipped in 12 for the Lady Tigers. These two teammates also contributed 16 points from the service line. Gwinner was 11/13 with two aces and Ivy went 9/10 with an ace.

Other attack stats for Galion: Gillian Miller- 8 kills; Samantha Comer- 6 kills; Kasidee Sinclair- 5 kills and Kayla Hardy- kill.

Galion, as a team, went 73/81 on the serve for 51 total points. Sinclair served up 17 points on 19/20 serving and earned six of the 13 Tigers’ aces. Hardy also contributed three aces in the Galion victory.

Other service stats for Galion: Hardy- 12/13, 3 aces, 6 points; Kate Schieber- 16/17, 6 points and Nicole Thomas- 6/8, ace.

Hardy was also the primary ball handler for the Lady Tigers, going 104/107 setting en route to racking up 37 assists.

Other ball handling stats for Galion: Schieber- 9/9, assist; Thomas- 4/4, assist and Josie Ehrman- 2/2, assist.

Defensively, Gwinner was back at the night to thwart the Lady Red attack and recorded six total blocks. Gillian Miller and Sinclair also provided a wall at the net, recording three blocks apiece for Galion. Sinclair lead the way in the dig department as well with 21 and Hardy dug out 19 Bellevue scoring attempts to aide in the Galion cause. In total, the team marked up 76 total digs on the evening.

Other defensive stats for Galion: Team- 54/67 serve receptions, 11 blocks and 76 digs; Hardy- block, 19 digs; Thomas- 13 digs; Ivy- 11 digs and Comer- block.

After their league opener at Pleasant on Thursday, the Galion Lady Tigers will return home for a non-league match-up with the squad from Willard on Saturday, August 26. Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference play will resume on Tuesday, August 29 when Galion
