LEXINGTON — The Division II sectional tennis matches were originally scheduled for Shelby High School on Thursday morning. However, after about 45 minutes of constant precipitation, the decision was made to move the competition to the Lakewood Racquet Club in Lexington, an indoor facility. Singles were played indoors at the club, and doubles were later moved to Lexington High School.
Max Papenhausen had some success for Galion on the day, winning his matchup against Thomas Andrews of Ontario; 6-0, 6-3. Papenhausen would be eliminated from the tournament after dropping his contest with St.Pete’s Harrison Hecker; 6-1, 6-0.
The doubles squad of Nic Oehler and Matt Sparks received a first-round bye to start the day and would defeat their Bucyrus opponent; 6-2, 6-1 in the second round of play. Oehler and Sparks faced off against a tandem from Norwalk and the third round and were defeated; 6-0, 6-1.
Landon Rose and Lucas Conner teamed up for doubles action in the sectional tournament and advanced to the second round after beating their Bucyrus opponent; 6-0, 6-1. Like Oehler and Sparks, Rose and Conner were eliminated by a Norwalk doubles squad; 6-1, 6-1.
Other results from sectionals action: Galion’s Bryce Barnhart lost 6-1, 6-2 to Luke Henrich of St. Peter’s; Galion’s Tyler Harris lost 6-2, 6-1 to Kyle Hamm of Bucyrus.
For Crestline, Skyler Browning lost 6-0, 6-0 to Ajit Ventakakakrishnan of Lexington; and Crestline’s Logan Parella lost 6-1, 6-0 to Conner Friend of Ontario.
Galion 3, St. Peter’s 2
GALION — On Tuesday afternoon, the Galion Tennis team wrapped up their 2017 regular season by hosting and defeating the St. Peter’s Spartans by a final tally of 3-2.
Nic Oehler and Matt Sparks cruised to a victory at first doubles by a final score of 6-4, 6-2. Bryce Barnhart and Max Papenhausen were also victorious at second doubles for the Tigers, winning 6-4, 6-4.
First doubles teams for Galion finish the season with a 16-7 record while the second doubles teams for the Tigers were 17-5.
Galion’s other point on the afternoon was scored by Lucas Conner at third singles. Conner won his match 6-4, 6-4 to secure the Tigers’ victory.
Landon Rose was defeated at first singles; 0-6, 1-6 and Tyler Harris dropped his second singles contest; 1-6, 0-6.
