Bucyrus students celebrate Read Aloud Day

BUCYRUS – Students and staff at Bucyrus Elementary School took time out of the school day to participate in World Read Aloud Day on Feb. 16. The event is part of the school’s Right to Read Week activities Feb. 27 through March 3.

The school took time first thing in the morning to do a building-wide read aloud session to kick off the day’s activities. Students then read aloud in their individual classrooms throughout the day.

“We decided to make this part of Right to Read Week because we’re always looking for new ways to incorporate read aloud opportunities for our students,” said Elementary School librarian Diane Kaple. “We want to encourage families to read aloud with their child 15-20 minutes every night to help create a love for books.”

World Read Aloud Day motivates children, teens, and adults worldwide to celebrate the power of words and creates a community of readers taking action to show the world that the right to literacy belongs to all people. World Read Aloud Day is celebrated by millions of people in more than 100 countries.

“In addition to the read alouds, each class made a story quilt for the book they read in the classroom,” said Kaple. “The entire Elementary School story quilt will be on display during Family Literacy Night March 2.”

The Elementary School’s 2017 Right to Read Week activities will be highlighted by a building-wide Reading Challenge, Spirit Week events and the Family Literacy Night.

“Our families have had a tremendously positive response to our Family Literacy Night event each year,” said Kaple. “This year’s Right to Read Week is going to be a fantastic celebration of reading and literacy, and our students and staff can’t wait for it to begin!”
