GALION — Galion City Schools will welcome students and staff back to school Wednesday, Aug. 24. The start of the new school year will bring several important changes for students, staff and families.

The first is the Professional Development schedule for staff. The district will be on a two-hour delay starting the third Wednesday of each month.

The next change is the start and end of the school day for the Primary and Intermediate Schools. The school day will begin at 8:50 a.m. and end at 3:45 p.m. for the 2016-2017 school year.

“We made the change to the Professional Development schedule to be more accommodating to students and parents,” said Galion Superintendent Jim Grubbs. “We found parents were inconvenienced by the one-hour early release twice a month, so we worked with our staff to find a solution that would benefit all involved.”

Students who qualify for the free and reduced lunch program will be eligible for a free breakfast each morning prior to the start of school. The regular price for a student breakfast is $1.25, and includes choice of milk. Lunch prices for 2016-17 School year ares: High School and Middle School, $2.75, $.40 for reduced; Intermediate and Primary, $2.60, $.40 for reduced. Adult meal prices district-wide are: Breakfast-$1.50; Lunch-$3.50 (both prices include choice of milk).

The district has worked to give parents the ability to pay school fees through the PayForIt.net online portal. Parents will continue to be able to add funds to their child’s lunch account through the PayForIt.net portal. The district has waived all transaction fees related to parents’ use of the portal.

“The treasurer’s office and technology department have worked diligently this summer to make it easier for our parents to pay standard school fees through the online portal,” Grubbs said. “Our goal in the future is to give parents the ability to pay all their child’s school fees utilizing the PayForIt.net portal.”

The Technology Department will distribute iPads and laptops during open house and orientations events at the Intermediate School on Aug. 22, at the Middle School Aug. 18 and Aug. 22 and at the High School on Aug. 19 to students who have turned in the signature page of the Acceptable Use Policy, which can be downloaded from the website.
