Bucyrus High School seniors are just days away from taking the next steps in their lives. The celebration of the Class of 2016 will begin the Senior Academic Awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m. in the Alex Kish Memorial gymnasium May 19. Following the Senior Awards activities, a student-led baccalaureate service will be held.

The Senior Awards night is an annual ceremony where seniors are recognized for outstanding accomplishments during their high school career. It’s also an evening where students receive scholarships from local and regional organizations.

“The Senior Awards program is a great lead-in to our graduation ceremony,” Secondary School Principal Dr. Mark Burke said. “We are very proud of the many accomplishments of the Class of 2016, and this ceremony gives us the opportunity to showcase those feats.”

Shortly after the conclusion of the Senior Awards program, the annual student-led baccalaureate service will begin in the Kish gymnasium. This special student organized activity, sponsored by the Bucyrus Ministerial Fellowship, will feature many community members, as well as graduating seniors sharing inspirational readings, songs and scriptures.

“Every year, our seniors do a fantastic job organizing and leading the baccalaureate service,” Dr. Burke said. “Students selected community members, making this an even more special night for our seniors and the community.”

Pastor Mike Corwin will lead the invocation and benediction, and Pastor Dan Rebon will deliver the message to the students and visitors in attendance. A reception with cake and punch will follow the ceremony.

The Class of 2016 celebration will conclude with the annual graduation ceremony at 2 p.m. in the Alex Kish Memorial Gymnasium May 22. Student speakers for this year’s commencement ceremony include Ashley Keener and Emily Elchert. A total of 80 Bucyrus seniors will be moving on to the next stage of their lives.

“Graduation is an exciting time for students, parents and our entire school family,” Superintendent Kevin Kimmel said. “I speak for the entire staff and Board of Education when I say that we could not be more proud and appreciative of this group of seniors for the leadership they have displayed throughout their careers, and the lasting impact they have had on the entire school district. I want to personally congratulate each member of the Class of 2016 and wish them all the best in their future endeavors.”
