GALION – Galion physical education teacher Matt Tyrrell was named as the latest recipient of the Believe, Achieve, Succeed Award during the regular Galion City School District Board of Education meeting Dec. 15.
The award program is designed to recognize teachers and staff members who are going beyond the call of duty to make a positive impact on the lives of students. Staff members are nominated by building administrators and other staff members, and the award recipient is selected by Superintendent Jim Grubbs, based on the nominations received.
“Mr. Tyrrell has played a vital role in many of the positive programs we’ve been working to develop in the district,” said Grubbs. “He works diligently to find new and innovative ways to positively impact the lives of Galion students.”
Tyrrell developed a new program at Galion Intermediate School called Learning Readiness Physical Education (LRPE) for fifth-grade students during the 2015-16 school year. The program is based on the latest research showing the positive impact everyday physical education has on learning. The first year of the program was such a success that it was expanded to include fourth-grade students during the 2016-17 school year.
“Matt has shown tremendous dedication to our students and community through his implementation of LRPE, and now as a lighthouse team representative for The Leader in Me program ,” said Alex Sharick, Galion Intermediate School Principal . “Matt truly exhibits the qualities of a leader and strives daily to lead by example with character and integrity.”
As the recipient of the Believe, Achieve, Succeed Award, Tyrrell was publicly recognized by the school board and received a board commendation for his efforts.
“I want to thank Mr. Sharick for nominating me, and Mr. Grubbs for selecting me,” Tyrrell said. “It is an honor to receive this award, and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve Galion students, parents, staff and the entire community.”
