Galion’s Barbara Abraham honored for volunteer work

ONTARIO – The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging Inc. has named Galion’s Barbara Abraham the 2016 Outstanding Senior Citizen for Crawford County. She and eight other recipients were honored Aug. 25 at a ceremony hosted at Hawkins Corner.

Abraham, a dedicated volunteer at Galion Hospital, has amassed 10,200 volunteer hours during the past 15 years. She is an active member of the Galion Hospital Auxiliary Twig 3, holding leadership positions like chairman, first vice president, and auxiliary president. She currently serves as secretary. Abraham was also the 2007 Adelaide Vergon Recipient (Volunteer of the Year.)

Each year the Area Agency on Aging honors senior citizens who are making a difference in their communities and present a positive image of aging.

Winners must first be nominated by an individual or organization involved with seniors. They are then selected by the Agency based on the impact of their contributions and accomplishments within the community made after reaching age 60. There is one award recipient for each county in the Agency’s service area (Ashland, Crawford, Huron, Knox, Marion, Morrow, Richland, Seneca, and Wyandot, respectfully.)

Additionally, the following residents of Crawford County received the 2016 Safe Driver Award at the ceremony: Sam Eichhorn, Richard Gearhart, Don Heydinger, Don Neumann, Kevin Ruth, Dave Schifer, Chuck Siefert, Jack Starcher, and Mike Tighe.

The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging, Inc., located at 2131 Park Avenue West in Ontario,provides leadership, collaboration, coordination and services to older adults, people with disabilities, their caregivers & resource networks that support individual choice, independence and dignity.
