Girls golf: Galion drops MOAC match to Pleasant

MARION — The Galion Lady Tigers fell to Pleasant in Mid Ohio Athletic Conference golf action Monday night.

The Lady Tigers were bested by the home squad, 178-227, at Marion Country Club. It marked the first league match of the season for the Lady Tigers.

Wet course conditions didn’t slow down the host Lady Spartans as they carded the top two scores from Dina Shah (35) and Maura Murphy (38). Other scores for Pleasant were a 52 and 53.

Junior Julia Conner led the Lady Tigers were led by with a final score of 51. Galion also took scores from senior Missi Vonhoupe who shot her season average 60. Juniors Izzie Willacker and Ellexia Ratcliff shot rounds of 61 and 65, respectively. Other drop scores for Galion were Taylor Kieffer (68), Addie Reed (72), Makenzie Lehman (74), and Destany Palasia (76).

“Pleasant is a solid team. They are the favorites for the MOAC title this season,” Coach Alan Conner said. “Our girls played tough today but still have a lot of work to do if we’re going to catch them, fortunately, we get another shot at them at home in a couple weeks. It’s still early, but we need to keep improving if we want to continue to compete.”

The loss drops the Galion girls record to 1-1 on the season and 0-1 in league play.

Pleasant is now 2-0 overall and in the MOAC.

Galion’s next match is Wednesday, Aug. 18 at Highland. Tee time is 4:30 p.m. at Wyandot Golf Course.

Lady Tigers at Tiffin Invite

TIFFIN — The Galion High School girls golf team competed at the Tiffin Invitational on Friday, Aug. 13, placing 10th against the field of 17 teams.

The Tigers were led by Junior Julia Conner who earned team medalist honors after carding a total score of 111. She shot 57 on the front nine and posted a score of 54 on the back nine. The Lady Tigers compiled a team score of 502.

Senior Missy Vonhoupe shot 59 and 60 for a total of 119. Juniors Izzie Willacker and Ellexia Ratcliff rounded out the scoring with final tallies of 131 and 141, respectively. Drop scores for Galion were recorded by sophomores Taylor Keiffer (142) and Addison Reed (152).

The Tiffin Invitational hosted 17 teams and included 97 girls at Mohawk Golf and Country Club in Seneca County. Conner’s 111 score placed her in 24th in the individual standings and earned her the team medalist honor for the third straight year at that tournament.

“The girls played tough today. This was our first 18-hole tourney of the season. They fought through the heat and fatigue to card some nice scores.” Galion Head Coach Alan Conner said. “Mohawk is one of the toughest courses in the area with the rolling hills, water, and some longer holes. Overall, I’m happy how the girls performed.”
