Tennis: Tigers split MOAC matches against Vikings, Spartans

MARION — The Galion tennis team rebounded from a season-opening loss with a solid victory.

The Tigers (1-1, 1-1 MOAC) blanked Pleasant 5-0 in Mid Ohio Athletic Conference action on Wednesday. Galion did not lose a set against the Spartans.

At first singles, Matt Gimbel swept Pleasant’s Dane Williams, 6-2, 6-3.

Chris Amick of Galion remained undefeated at second singles with a 6-4, 6-2, win over Eian Zachman of Pleasant.

John Evans claimed victory for Galion at third singles, defeating Pleasant’s Hunter Yancey in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles play, the Tigers duo of Zach Grimes and Jamie Hollis swept Pleasant’s Rilee Hass and Zach Carr, 6-3, 6-1, to win at first doubles.

At second doubles, Galion’s Nate Barre and Caden Jutz knocked off Pleasant’s Seth Abraham and Ryan Roth, 7-6 (7-2 tiebreaker), 6-4.

Pleasant (3-1, 1-1 MOAC) was undefeated heading into that match after defeating Kenton 4-1, Bucyrus 5-0, and Marion Harding 4-1.

River Valley 4, Galion 1

CALEDONIA — The 2021 boys tennis season opened Tuesday with Galion dropping an MOAC road match against River Valley, 4-1.

It was the first match of the season for both programs.

Galion’s lone win came at second singles when senior Chris Amick swept River Valley’s Chase Osborne, 6-3, 6-1.

After falling behind early, River Valley’s Josh Mulvaine ralied to defeat Galion’s Matt Gimbel at first singles, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

River Valley’s Zeke Klensman won a hard-fought match against Galion’s John Evans at third singles. Klensman prevailed, 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker), 2-6, 7-5.

In doubles action, the Vikings duo of Yosh Desai and Carson Bullinger held off Galion’s Jamie Hollis and Zach Grimes to win the first doubles match, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker).

At second doubles, River Valley’s Abbie Burns and Wes Stephens defeated Galion’s Nate Barre and Caden Jutz, 6-2, 6-2.

Upcoming schedule

Galion is scheduled to play two MOAC matches and a tournament in the coming week. The Tigers travel to Clear Fork on Tuesday, April 6 and then play host to Shelby on Thursday, April 8. Galion is scheduled to play in the Ashland Invitational on Saturday, April 10.

The Tigers’ home match against Marion Harding that was scheduled for Thursday, April 1 will be played on Friday, April 16 at Heise Park.
