Great Lakes baseball league changes playoff format

GALION — Now that the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League (GLSCL) has expanded to three divisions, a new post-season format has been announced.

The playoff run for all teams will begin two days after the conclusion of the regular season, or Tuesday Aug. 1 at 7:05 p.m. On that day, two play-in games will determine which teams will make it as the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds. The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds will be the South Division and the Central Division regular-season champions.

Play-in game No. 1 will see the North Division runner-up clashing against the North Division champion. Game No. 2 will pit the Central Division runner-up against the South Division runner-up.

From there, the teams will enter the playoff series. This series will be a best-o- three format and starts the day after the last play-in game. If the two teams playing are in the same division or contiguous divisions, the higher seed will host games one and three. If a team from the South Division plays a team from the North Division, the higher seed will host games two and three. Seeds three and four, entering the series after winning their play-in games, will be determined by regular season record. The tentative starting scheduling is listed below.

  • Seed 4 vs Seed 1 Game 1 on Wed 8/2/17 @ 7:05 PM (if no previous rain dates)
  • Seed 3 vs Seed 2 Game 1 on Wed 8/2/17 @ 7:05 PM (if no previous rain dates)

The first team to win two games in their playoff series will then enter the championship series, which will also be a best-of-three format. The GLSCL championship series is set to start the day after the last playoff series game. If the two teams that are playing are in the same division or contiguous divisions, the higher seed will host games one and three. If a team from the South Division plays a team from the North Division, the higher seed will host games two and three. The tentative starting schedule is listed below.

  • Game 1 on Sat 8/5/17 @ 7:05 PM (if no previous rain dates)

Here is the standings in the GLSCL as of Friday July 21 at 8 am.

NORTH DIVISION

Lake Erie Monarchs 21-10

St.Clair Green Giants 18-13; 3 GB

Muskegon Clippers 15-18: 7 GB

Grand River Loggers 15-18; 7 GB

Irish Hills Leprechauns 12-22; 10.5 GB

CENTRAL DIVISION

*Lima Locos 24-8

Grand Lake Mariners 19-13; 5 GB

GALION GRADERS 15-17; 9GB

Licking County Settlers 12-19; 11.5 GB

Lorain County Ironmen 10-23; 14.5 GB

SOUTH DIVISION

Cincinnati Steam 19-13

Richmond Jazz 19-13

Southern Ohio Copperheads 17-15; 2 GB

Xenia Scouts 15-17; 4 GB

*Hamilton Joes 10-22; 9 GB

*- denotes teams that played in last year’s championship; Hamilton defeated Lima for the 2016 championship.

So, if one were to take the games remaining and compare them to the format at which the playoffs are set to be played, here’s who has a chance to make it to the postseason:

NORTH DIVISION: The only team that has been fully mathematically eliminated is the Leprechauns; However, the chances do not look promising for the Clippers or the Loggers.

CENTRAL DIVISION: Unfortunately, it looks as if the only two teams that have a chance for advancement are the Locos and the Mariners.

SOUTH DIVISION: Technically, every team in the South has at least a chance; However, it appears that Hamilton may be the only team to be eliminated by the numbers.
